Wall Coverings: Not Just for walls?

Wall Coverings: Not Just for walls?

The yoga studio down the street from me was closed for remodeling, according to the sign.  With that in mind, I was surprised to walk in a week later to the same pale green walls as before.  When I asked where all the remodeling had been done, the instructor pointed to the ceiling.  Instead of stark whiteness occasionally interrupted by recessed lighting, I saw swirling clouds in a deep blue sky.  The patterns were hypnotic and lifelike—they almost seemed to move.  It never would have occurred to me to apply fabric wall coverings to a yoga studio ceiling.  But clearly, it was genius.

As it happens, there are a multitude of things that one can do with wall coverings that have nothing to do with walls.  Crafting websites suggest fabric wall coverings be used in scrapbooks, or to make covers for photo albums and recipe books, or cases for ebook readers or tablet-style computers.  Thicker, water resistant wall coverings like vinyl can be used to create tote bags or gift boxes.  They can also lend heft and durability to storage containers—making them attractive enough to leave out in a common area without giving the impression that you just moved in.  Lighter-weight wall coverings can be fashioned into appliqués or embellishments for just about anything.

There are a few things to consider when choosing wall coverings for crafting purposes.  Is the primary function attractiveness?  Functionality?  Durability?  Does it need to be water resistant?  Scratch resistant?  Will it be used outdoors and therefore need to resist sun-bleaching?  Once you have your answers, a reputable dealer can explain the various types of wall coverings so you may make your selections with confidence.  You might be surprised at how many ideas burst forth once you begin crafting with wall coverings.  Let's just hope your walls don't get jealous!
