Why You Should Use a Wallpaper Calculator

For a lot of families, the first step to planning a project is asking how much it costs. When it comes to wall coverings, you may need help keeping to your budget. That's where a wallpaper calculator comes in handy! It helps you determine how many rolls you need for your space, how much it will cost, and how much trim or border material will be needed. A wallpaper calculator is a user-oriented tool that does the budgeting and math for you so you can concentrate on creating a beautiful space.

When you enter the prices of your chosen wall coverings, trim, and borders, the wallpaper calculator will tell you exactly how much you'll be spending, helping you stay within your budget. Using a wallpaper calculator makes measuring, budgeting, and purchasing easy. Perhaps you'd like to wallpaper the ceiling instead of the walls, or maybe just one wall? Maybe you'd like to use solid and patterned wall coverings in one room and try a photorealistic mural and a fun border in another? A wallpaper calculator lets you compare your costs quickly, leaving you more time and energy for the fun stuff like choosing patterns, themes, and colors.

How Does the Wallpaper Estimator Work?

This estimator determines the approximate amount of wallpaper you need, area you will cover, number of rolls, and optional trim required for your room. It automatically calculates everything based on the information you enter. The calculator ignores areas occupied by doors or windows because trimming them often requires as much material as the area you are trimming around. Remember, this is a guide. The wallpaper calculator will round up, just as you should when budgeting. Always better to have a little extra than to run out.

Because of cuts, patterns that need to be matched, and non-usable ends, wallpaper rolls are generally considered to be between only 85 and 95 percent usable. The smaller the pattern, the less extra is needed. Trim border rolls follow the same guideline but are generally considered to have more waste since most people want an entire border without a cut on a wall. Walls longer than 15 linear feet require a longer roll, if possible, or a splice.

The first step involves measuring the room(s) that you intend to decorate. You might be tempted to subtract for windows and doors. However, this is not necessary, nor is it a particularly good idea. When wallpaper is hung, it has to be trimmed around doors and windows, which may require just as much usable wallpaper as a solid wall. Usable Wallpaper generally means eighty-five to ninety-five percent of each roll. When working with patterns that require exact matching, this percentage may be slightly smaller. Expect one roll of wallpaper to be about twenty-seven square feet, and one roll of trim/border to be about fifteen feet long.

Just enter the room dimensions and the cost of the wallpaper per roll. How to calculate the linear feet of a wall? Measure along the top or bottom of the wall, and you also want to measure the vertical height. You’ll find the cost of each wallpaper on its product page. The total cost of the wallpaper for your project and the amount you’ll need is calculated instantly. To try a different wallpaper or room, simply enter your new numbers.

Wallpaper Trim Calculator

If you wish to use decorative trim, just check the box. It calculates the amount needed for a single trim strip; if you wish to use two or three, double or triple the quantity of calculated decorative trim rolls as a result. Decorative trim is assumed to be at the ceiling and therefore is not hampered by doors or windows. The requirement (and subsequent cost) in actual use will change if positioned in the center of the wall or close to the floor because of doors and windows. Trim rolls are about 15 linear feet long.

How Is Wallpaper Packaged and Sold?

Most wallpaper is priced by the roll, although it's usually packaged and sold in double rolls. Purchase a bit more wallpaper than you think you need so that you don't fall short; remember that with patterned papers that must match at the seams, you may need as much as 25 percent more wallpaper than your initial calculations to ensure that it looks good and lines up properly.

How many yards are in a roll of wallpaper? There are five yards of wallpaper in each roll. Because each roll is 27 inches wide, you have 27 square feet in each roll. Don’t worry, our wallcoverings calculator will do all the math for you.

When you buy wallpaper or wallcoverings, look for run numbers, lot numbers, or run codings on the label or roll. These numbers should be the same on each roll. Wallcoverings are printed in large batches, and the colors can vary slightly but noticeably between the batches. This provides a major reason to get all the wallpaper you'll need at the same time.

To avoid the risk of running out of wallpaper, our calculator rounds up and calculates using the average usable quantity on a roll. Our handy calculator is just one of the ways we help you along the way at Wallpapers To Go!
